Welcome to KWAG's Home Page

The image above shows the wind turbine that was being proposed for the Low Weald and which prompted the creation of our action group.

After two years of campaigning KWAG was informed by the wind developer, Wind Direct, that they had decided not to proceed with the turbine for commercial reasons. One should bear in mind that Wind Direct successfully applied to the planners for an anemometry mast, this mast was put in place and measured wind speeds for around two years; a full planning application for the wind turbine was also lodged but subsequently withdrawn because of the flaws it contained: an appeal was made to the Secretary of State in order to avoid a full Environmental Impact Assessment and every indication was given that there would be a resubmission of a planning application for the turbine.

The commercial reasons for the decision not to proceed are therefore undoubtedly due to a combination of inadequate wind speeds and very effective campaigning by KWAG.

The Weald of Kent is a completely inappropriate location for industrial wind turbines. It is one of the least windy areas in the British Isles , it has a beautiful unspoilt landscape and is the heartland of the iconic Kentish oast houses which are such an attractive and important landscape feature. It also has very strong literary connections through the writings of Siegfried Sassoon who was prepared to go to war to protect the Wealden landscape he loved.

We would be amazed if any other wind developers also want to throw away time and money but we remain ready to stop them if they do. This site has been slimmed down and is no longer updated but keeps the history of the campaign as a matter of record (see the links on the left).
